At the heart of Cambridge University's 800th birthday celebrations will be Cambridge Cantat 800, a week-long festival of choral and organ music showcasing the very best that the Cambridge choral tradition has to offer.  You will find during our Festival week events to suit all tastes.  Organ and choral recitals galore, workshops and participatory events, a song recital and late-night services.  The Haydn anniversary is marked in several of our programmes, while Cambridge composers and manuscripts feature in others.  We are delighted to welcome three distinguished former Cambridge music directors: David Hill will conduct a massed choir in our Festal Evensong (Wednesday), Christopher Robinson will be giving a conducting masterclass (Friday) and John Rutter will host a Come and Sing event (Saturday).  Cambridge buildings are another star attraction, including a rare opportunity to hear a concert in the University's Senate House.  From lunchtime until late there will be events of all descriptions.  But the purpose of the Festival is not merely celebration.  Through workshops and Come and Sing events, through educational links forged between schools and colleges, and through the very diversity of events on offer, we hope that the Festival will stimulate further thoughts about how our music making, in these beautiful, charmed chapels of Cambridge, can contribute to our national culture.
